I guess this manifesto is a little late, considering we’re probably more than halfway through the fall here in Wisconsin. It’s quite cold already, but hopefully that won’t stop me from crossing off everything on my list. You’ll notice that this manifesto is quite a bit shorter than my summer one. I’m the opposite of the majority of people and I prefer the summer to the fall. These goals are also a bit more involved than most of my summer ones. I’d like to elaborate on them a bit.
Make Soup: I love soup. I have been experimenting with some different kinds of soups and I can’t wait to try even more this fall (and winter). I’d love some suggestions!
Collect Leaves: I’ve been admiring all the beautiful leaves bursting with color here. I’d really like to take a few walks and collect a variety of types and colors and make a collage.
Crochet & knit: It’s chilly already, which has caused my fingers to do some itching to knit and crochet. I’ve started to make a few granny squares, and I’d love to amass enough for a blanket. I also want a new hat, a new scarf, and possibly a sweater. I’m feeling ambitious.
Try Mulled Wine: The other night, a friend was talking about how much they enjoyed mulled wine. I’ve never had it, but it sounds pretty delicious. I’d love to make some to try.
Photograph People: I’d really like to expand my photography comfort zone and learn to photograph people. I figure the only way to do this is experience. Now if only my boyfriend didn’t hate having his picture taken.
Carve Pumpkins: Carving pumpkins has been one of my all time favorite fall activities for basically forever. I’m planning to carve some awesome pumpkins this year.
Make Apple Pie: Jon is allergic to raw apples and I’m not the biggest fan of apple sauce, so I figured I’d better learn to make some really good apple pie. Then the both of us can enjoy the delicious apples, fall provides.
Explore Wisconsin: Since we arrived over a month ago, we haven’t had the opportunity to do too much traveling. We’ve both focused on settling in, but I’m feeling more comfortable now. I hope we can do a bit of exploring some nearby towns and areas before it gets too cold and snowy.
I also forgot to put it in the photo, but I would like to get a library card so I can read some more books. I was on a bit of a reading frenzy but I had to stop because I was spending too much money! I need to start utilizing the public library.
So what are your goals for the fall?

You are keeping me, and I’m sure lots of others, focused on the crafty, nature-loving side of fall, which is great. I always have an excessive list of goals (hopefuls, rather than set goals, really), but one of them is to use up the large numbers of acorn squash recently taken out of my veggie garden! I really get disturbed by waste, even if these acorn squashes were actually a “happy accident” in my garden.
I love happy garden accidents. Acorn squash are pretty neat! I bet you could make some delicious soups or puree it and use it in recipes that call for pumpkin!
OH! You are right, and I just made the most delightful, creamy soup out of them! Definitely a keeper. I might have to think like a proper farm wife and cut them all up (developing huge biceps) and freeze them for subsequent recipes Good idea substituting them for pumpkin–will do.
Oh yay! I’m glad you used them for soup and that it turned out well. I made some curried butternut squash soup tonight, and I’ll be sharing the recipe sometime soon.
I love squashes because they can almost all be substituted for each other. And they’re such a fun vegetable to experiment with because they can be savory or sweet!
Oh, curried squash soup will be SO good.
Definitely was a win!
Am I too old to roll in the leaves? Can you save me some for my visit? And promise, no snow by November
I can’t promise no snow, and I don’t know if I can save enough leaves for you to roll in, but I’ll make sure to save some to show!
I agree with you, summer > fall. But I love your manifesto. I’d like to carve a pumpkin this year I think. And soup is my jam. I make it at least once a week. Also, library cards are the best! I also enjoy reading the free classics that are available online.
I make soup at least once a week as well. I just made some butternut squash and it was delicious! I just have to figure out what soups I can make for both Jon and me, because he likes cream based, meaty soups and I prefer vegetable broth based soups. I’ll have to check out some free classics online, what are your favorites?
Love this. Very beautiful, Frankie. I just made a pumpkin curry that is to die for. Do you like curries?
I want that recipe!! Did you see my email?
The leaves, I have been walking through the leaves gathered in the gutter as if I were a toddler. It is so much fun!!
Haha! I love to do that too. The crunches of fall are my favorite!
I always make up a big crockpot full of Senate Navy Bean Soup. It is the one that they have served in the U.S. Senate Building Cafeteria for the last 100 years or so. It is a simple recipe of navy beans, ham, and a few vegetables. It is my husband’s favorite and it freezes well. I end up making a five meal batch at least once or twice during the fall and winter. The only change I do to the recipe is to add a bit of pepper flakes to spice it up a bit. When we visited the Senate building for lunch this year, we had it with our lunch and I noticed that tabasco sauce was made available to put in the soup.
That sounds delicious, I’ll definitely give that a try. I love bean soups!
